総評

ほぼ OK です。この課題には正解がありません。クエリーの回答者も生身の人間です。理解しやすいクエリーを書いたつもりなのに、意図が通じず、適切な回答をもらえないこともあります。現実には、何度もクエリーと回答をやりとりしながら、どう尋ねればどう回答されるかを見きわめ、よりよい書き方を探っていくことになります。

私自身は、Which does it mean, A or B? というときは、mean のあとにコンマを入れます。A が長くなれば、A の後にもコンマを入れます。A や B がさらに長くなれば、Which does it mean ? Does it mean A, or does it mean B ? などとします。そうしなくては絶対に通じないのか、と言われると、そこまで言い切る自信はありません。書くにしろ読むにしろ、よりシンプルなほうを好む人もいます。私の場合、くどすぎてかえってわかりにくくなっている場合もあるかもしれません。

しかし、私の方針としては、多少やぼったくなっても、かっこいい英文にならなくても、誤解なく一発で意図が通じることを目指して、コンマにしろハイフンにしろ、省略しないことにしています。

私がここで示す例およびコメントは、私自身の経験に基づくものであって、英文法書に基づくものではありません。ただ、こうすればうまくいった、という先例として、参考にはなるのではと考えています。どの言語の翻訳者も、クエリーライティングには苦労しています。各言語で独特の苦労がありますが、「動詞+目的語か修飾語+被修飾語か」という問題は、かなり多くの言語で共通する問題のようです。

次の表で、個別の評価と実例を示します。各問題について、右端に赤色で評価を書きました。また、その一行下には、そのストリングについて現実に発生したクエリー、回答、決定訳を、参考までに示しています。
