解説

UI 翻訳においては、文脈を知るための参考資料が不足していることが、よくあります。そのような場合は、クエリーなどで対処します。その一方で、「何もかも揃っている」というケースもあります。文脈を知るために機能を試すことができる英語版ソフトウェアビルド、必要なライセンス、テストデータ、マニュアル、オンライン ヘルプ ... 。つまり、翻訳を開始する時点で、英語版が完全に完成している場合です。

理想的なのは、あいまいなストリングは、ソフトウェアを動かしてみて、どこでどう表示されるのかを自分の目で確かめることです。しかし、ある程度大きなソフトウェアの場合、いきなりスーパーユーザーのように使いこなせるわけはなく、目指すストリングを表示させようにも、どこから始めたらよいのか、途方に暮れてしまいます。多くの場合、UI 翻訳のスケジュールはとてもタイトです。

この場合、最も効率的なのは、マニュアルやオンラインヘルプを参照することです。あいまいなストリングについては、マニュアルやオンラインヘルプで調べられるだけ調べ、それでもわからないものについて、お客様にクエリーを提出するか、あるいはがんばって実際に操作してみる、というアプローチが考えられます。

 

課題

フリーの GIS ソフトウェア、Quantum GIS (http://www.qgis.org/en/documentation/manuals.html) のローカライズを依頼されたと想定してください。お渡しするマニュアル　qgis-1.5.0_user_guide_en.pdf　を参考資料として使用しながら、下のUI ストリングを翻訳してください。

上記のサイトのダウンロードページから、ソフトウェア本体をダウンロードして動かしてみることも可能です。ただし、下の UI ストリングは、すべて、マニュアル qgis-1.5.0_user_guide_en.pdf の中に何らかの記述があります。
